In 1985, Jill Rasmussen was a college student at the University of Minnesota working at Thorpe Brothers Commercial. For two years, she would work on a typewriter, inputting purchase agreements, while watching the hustle and bustle of the industrial brokers sell buildings. She had the feeling that she could do the same thing. So, the day after she graduated college, she got her Real Estate License.
After a handful of years of experience under her belt at Coldwell Banker Commercial (now CBRE), Jill made the switch to Northco Real Estate Services, where she learned a lot of healthcare…and really liked and gravitated toward it.
“I felt like it was such a niche because the players in that sector needed so much guidance and advisory…I felt like the value that I could add to those transactions in that market was more interesting to me. So, that was a good spot,” Rasmussen said.
Working in the healthcare sector proved to be much different that all the other legs in Commercial Real Estate. Transactions take a lot longer to put together and can force brokers to believe it will never happen, and therefore, look past the transactions at times.
“There’s not a lot of movement going on. Once they do find a spot and put in that capital and invest in the space, they don’t want to move if they don’t have to. It’s a long-term decision and a big commitment. So, I really like to help them out,” Rasmussen.
After mastering all the moving parts in her job, today, Rasmussen is now one of three Principals at Davis Healthcare Real Estate Group. From providing strategy to hospital systems and independent clinics, to understanding the development, ownership, and the brokerage side –pull it all together, Jill says is what makes a successful brokerage at Davis.
“We’re able to provide a full-service brokerage and not have to do it under the umbrella of a bigger company that would have competing groups and other things that wouldn’t be 100% the main focus,” Rasmussen said.
